Check the assignments page.  This is it.  ALL assignments are due by the end of the period June 2.  Our final class will be in my classroom (SS8).

Here are the best images…

One of the powers of Google Maps is the ability to plot items on a customized map. Using the YourGMap tour, give us a tour of 10 locations in your community or San Diego as a whole. It can be parks, past schools, hand outs, etc. Provide and address, information for each place, and a sentence about when it shows up on your tour.

Enjoy.

One of the easiest Web 2.0 applications to manipulate is Google Maps.  Review the Google Maps Mash-ups blog, select one, play with it, and report back on your blog.

There are lots of strange and interesting Mash-ups out there in Internetland. We are going to explore a few of them. For these mini-assignments you are going to spend some time exploring the mash-up and then write about it in your blog.

For this first one, we are going to use the Mash-up Ask500Questions. Set up an account, ask a question (make sure to read their suggestions for writing good questions), and tell me how it is a Mash-up. The question that gets the most responses or gets to 500 first, wins a prize.

So this week’s assignment is looking at some of the online image editors out there.  In spirit of some competition, we are going to have a competition.  As part of this assignment, you are going to use one of the online editors and one or more of the six images I’ve provided to create an artistic masterpiece.  Go crazy, use one image or all of them!  The winner will have his/her picture posted on this site and earn a whopping 20 points of extra credit.  The finished image (and the assignment) is due by next Friday (5/9).  Voting will occur the following week.  To submit your entry, e-mail it to danmcdowell@gmail.com.

Assignments

This will probably bleed into next week, but here are the assignments:

For the next few weeks, you will have an ongoing blog assignment.  Each week, due by the end of the period on Friday, you will review your RSS feeds (in Bloglines or Google Reader) and report back on a topic, idea, news item, Web 2.0 application, etc.  Techcrunch and Mashable are literally on the cutting edge of technology news and Web 2.0 start ups.  When something happens regarding an Internet company, it is reported here first.   The mainstream news picks up technology stories from these sites.

So you are going to live the life of a technology blogger who skims these sites for the latest updates and web-based applications.

Here is the format for the blog.

Title: Blog Assignment #10 - (2-3 word descriptor)

For the post, complete the following:

  1. A link to the blog post (this will mean you need to actually visit the blog post, not just view it in your reader).
  2. A link to the application, the company being discussed, etc.
  3. A summary of article, including important background information.
  4. A short analysis on its importance to the world of technology, web design, and, if relevant, education.
  5. If you are discussing a web application, check it out and report back.

All posts should be at least 150 words so pick articles from the blogs that give you something to write about.  It is important that you write in a formal manner, using appropriate punctuation, spelling, etc.

Each of these posts will be worth 15 points.

For the remaining part of this week, here are your assignments:

  1. In your blog, answer the following questions:
    • In what ways do you already use Web 2.0 online applications?
    • What part of the presentation did you find the most interesting and why? (If you need to go back and review the PPT, look below!)
  2. Using RSS Assignment
