WWI Poetry Project (Summer)

This assignment has you creating a short photo montage to accompany a poem written by a WWI soldier.

Phase 1:  Poem Selection

Review the following sites and pick a poem.  You might want to copy and paste it into Word.

• World War I Poetry
• WWI Prose and Poetry
• The Lost Poets of WWI

Phase 2:  Visual Imagery

Select at least 10 photographs that complement your poem.  Download them to your computer.

Resources

• Photos from the Great War - an amazing site with over 1800 categorized photographs from WWI.
• World War I Color Photographs - most of the photos available from WWI are in black and white, here is a nice collection of colors pictures.
• Children in WWI - a collection the depicts kid soldiers.
• Photos from About.com - more photographs
• France at War - images from the French army
• More Photographs - categorized images
• World War I Posters - propaganda posters from WWI
• Different Worlds - more photosgraphs from WWI
• Art of WWI - paintings and sketches from WWI
• War Artists - click on each artist to see the paintings
• Imperial War Museum - search for topics (i.e. trenches)
• British Recruiting Posters - more propaganda posters

Phase 3: Photo Story

Using Jumpcut (it is owned by Yahoo, so you need a Yahoo account) you will upload your images and put together a photo montage.  You can add music or more pictures to make it better.

• SoundSnap - An amazing collection of FREE sounds - music, animals, etc.

• Internet Audio Archive - A large collection of public domain audio recordings from old radio shows to Grateful Dead concerts to great speeches.
• The Free Sound Project - More open source music and sound effects.
• CCmixter - Yet another great site with lots of free music.
• FreePlayMusic.com - Another great source of music for music. Provides clips of varied lengths, a lot of good mood music. However, they do have licensing restrictions - no public access on YouTube for music from this site.

Germany marks 75 years since parliament ceded power to Hitler

An interesting that once again shows how history is still relevant to day’s reflections about the future and the present.  Here is an article that discusses the 75th anniversary of Hitler gaining power in Germany.

Germany’s justice minister solemnly noted the upcoming 75th anniversary of a key milestone in the Nazi seizure of power — a pressured vote in parliament that allowed Adolf Hitler to become dictator.

Brigitte Zypries said the so-called Enabling Act — passed by Germany’s parliament on March 23, 1933 — signaled the legislative body’s own demise.

"With the passage of the Enabling Act, the parliament disempowered itself — the abandonment of the division of power destroyed the foundations for our liberal democracy," Zypries said Thursday.

Schindler’s List Follow Up

Holocaust Speaker

February 27, 2008

In order to attend the Holocaust Speaker on March 11 during 7th period, you will be required to complete all Holocaust-related assignments.  Not finishing or submitting these assignments will disqualify and you will not receive a ticket to enter the theater.  While we want as many students as possible to attend, we have found that when students are choosing to attend this event, they are significantly more respectful and appreciate the experience more.

Children of the Holocaust Project

The major project for this unit is the Children of the Holocaust WebQuest.  As noted on the Calendar of Events, you have two major deadlines for this project:

1. Monday, March 3 - Your research grid is due.
2. Thursday, March 6 - Your pre-write is due.

Please note that the due date for the project is Thursday, March 13.  If you are planning on leaving town early for spring break, make sure it is submitted before you go - otherwise it will be considered late.

Reichstag Fire Revisited

The German government just reversed the conviction of the man accused of starting the Reichstag fire.  Marinus van der Lubbe was executed and the Nazi government used this event to suspend civil rights and break all opposition.
